The Farm - How we started with Gloucester Old Spot Pigs:
In August 2002 we left the West
Midlands and moved to Penpethick Farm in North Cornwall.
The farm is a small holding of 16 acres. We are situated
by the coast and look directly at Lundy Island, a breath
taking site to behold if you were born in the city as we
both were. We set about giving the farm some much needed
tlc and tried to get to grips with living in our country
home. As lovers of animals we had soon rescued all
creatures great and small. In 2004 our neighbours asked
us to look after their Saddleback sows and our love of
pigs began. We researched rare breeds of pig and how to
start our own herd. The Gloucester Old Spot pig won our
hearts due to their rare breed status, lovely
temperament, wonderful spots, and big lop ears. In
addition to this Gloucester Old Spot sows are very good
mothers. We decided that all of our pigs would be kept
free range
and that they should be able to happily root through the soil. We
knew that our venture would necessitate the need for continual
learning and would depend on a wealth of experience gained
from other pig breeders. We continue to enjoy breeding
and rearing such a lovely breed of pig. If you are considering keeping
Gloucester Old Spots we sincerely hope that your journey
into keeping this breed will be as pleasurable as ours
continues to be.
